Scholarship Details:

Weldon H. Smith Scholastic Achievement Award 

As part of our local chapter’s commitment to student success and leadership development, we are proud to offer the Weldon H. Smith Scholastic Achievement Award. This award recognizes graduating male students who demonstrate academic excellence, strong character, and a commitment to service, leadership, and community engagement. 

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must be graduating male students who meet the following criteria: 

● Completion of the scholarship application with all required materials 

● Cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale 

● Demonstrated leadership, integrity, and personal growth (addressed through a personal statement or video submission) 

● Evidence of respect and positive relationships with teachers, peers, and community members (supported by letters of recommendation) 

● Acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution 

 

Application Deadline 

All application materials must be submitted by Monday, April 3, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. 

 

Required Application Materials 

A complete application includes: 

● Completed electronic scholarship application form 

● One (1) official or unofficial high school transcript 

● One (1) small color headshot photo 

● Two (2) letters of recommendation from school and/or community representatives (e.g., teacher, counselor, mentor) 

● Personal statement submission (written or video) 

 

Personal Statement Requirement 

Applicants must submit one of the following: 

● Written Personal Statement (200–300 words), OR 

● Video Submission (3–5 minutes) 

 

Applicants should select the format that best allows them to authentically share their story, values, and aspirations.

 

Written Personal Statement (200–300 words) 

In your written statement, reflect on your academic journey, personal growth, and commitment to leadership and service. Discuss how your experiences and community have shaped your goals and how this scholarship would support your continued impact. 

Video Submission Guidelines (3–5 minutes) 

Applicants choosing the video option should address the following: 

● Introduction: Name, high school, and future academic or career plans 

● Gratitude and Community: The role gratitude and community have played in shaping who you are 

● Collaboration and Brotherhood: How collaboration among men—through families, schools, churches, and organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—creates pathways to excellence 

● Legacy and Impact: How receiving this scholarship would enable you to continue a legacy of service, leadership, and positive community impact 

 

Videos should feature the applicant speaking clearly and be submitted as a shareable link (e.g., an unlisted YouTube or Google Drive link). 

Submission Best Practices (Video Applicants) 

● Recording device: Smartphone, tablet, or computer (no professional equipment required) 

● Dress: Business casual or professional attire encouraged 

● Lighting & Audio: Well-lit space with minimal background noise 

● Framing: Camera at eye level with full face visible 

● Delivery: Speak clearly, confidently, and authentically 

 

File Naming Requirement 

Video files should be saved using the following format: LastName_FirstName_WHSVideo.mp4 Example: Johnson_Michael_WHSVideo.mp4
